I began photographing and darkroom work at 9 years old with the mentoring of my father and grandfather, although my photographic skills have been primarily self taught throughout the past 51 years.
Today, I live with my wife Joyce in Moscow, Idaho within an agricultural region known as "The Palouse". The extensive rolling hills of the Palouse are dry land farming, providing picturesque rural backdrops year around.
Over the past few years I've been fortunate enough to be juried into and have several individual exhibitions. They ranged from Regionally to the Pacific NW, Washington D.C., California and the Midwest. I have been honored with photography awards and published as well. Artist's Statement
Nature blesses us with an ever-changing tapestry of beauty. My images communicate an honest rendering of these natural forces at work, be it deep into a National Park, fertile farmland or the heart of a city. The photographs I capture are expressions of a visual experience caught most often in a split second. They are a unique space within time itself, to be frozen for the life of the image.
The Purpose of my photography is to lend a meaningful perspective in celebrating the subject matter. I enjoy becoming involved and feeling a strong sense of the actual subject, exploring the compositional possibilities. Therefore, seeking to photograph it with simplification yet thoughtful sensibility in the direction of a unique personal perspective. The images I produce, by in large, are landscapes and fairly spirited in color... although not surrealistic. I am drawn to subject matter primarily for its color or that, which compliments it and the special classic quality of the subject itself!
The Primal Intent of my work is for people to feel comfortable and relaxed, although involved with observing the nuances within the image. Delving into new subject material, seeing a new horizon for the first time, is most often a surprising challenge and quite pleasurable for myself. I enjoy seeking new sights through travel and confronting the photographic possibilities.
The Growth of my photographic skills is seen directly through the quality of light and detail to composition that I now look for more closely. In recent years, subject matter has broadened to include people and still life. Additionally for myself, experimenting with photography is an educational experience and an exciting diversion from outdoor photography that I am primarily drawn towards.
A traditional SLR 35mm camera system is used in tandem with lenses ranging from 24 to 300mm. I prefer type R semi-glossy prints, for it produces a first generation print direct from the original transparency. The resultant image is sharper and better in contrast, besides being excellent with the primary colors. The photograph is nearly always printed up as full frame, i.e. with no cropping of the image.
"I thoroughly enjoy photographing the wonders of nature and transcending my visual experiences into images that I may share with others"!
